Students of Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill can become involved with the marathon in a variety of ways and with varying degrees of commitment. You will find below a description of the many ways you can become involved as a student. Please click on 'learn more' under any of the sections for more information on becoming involved.

Planning Board Chairs:
The planning board is composed of both Duke and Carolina students and is ultimately responsible for organizing and executing the Duke-Carolina Student Basketball Marathon fundraiser. Each board chairperson is responsible for his/her own committee. This requires the most commitment of any of the volunteer positions. [Click here for Descriptions & Contact Info]

Committee Members:

Committees are in charge of different aspects of the Duke-Carolina Student Basketball Marathon fundraiser. Each committee member works closely with their fellow committee members and respective committee chair to carryout a specific aspect of the marathon. While this is less of a commitment than a board chair, it still requires a substantial weekly commitment. [Click here for Descriptions & Contact Info]

Be a Player and form your own team:
Each team can consist of 6-8 players, each of whom will be responsible for raising as much money as they can for the kids (we have set the minimum at $100 per player). Each team will get to play 1-2 hours, depending on the number of teams interested. We strongly encourage applicants to commit to staying in the gym for the Full Marathon (26 hours), but you can also opt for the Half Marathon (13 hours), the Quarter Marathon (6 hours), or simply play Pickup (1 hour). We want teams to stay as long as they can to show support for the kids. Priority in playing time (we are expecting more applicants than we have time for) will go to those who (1) commit to stay the longest (2) turn in the forms first and (3) recruit sister/brother teams from the school down the road for intense match-ups. You can also sign up as an individual and we’ll make a team for you. Registration forms can be found on our Players page. If you have any questions, send them our way. [Click here for Players Page]

Become a Cheerleader:
While 26 different teams of Duke and UNC students are competing on the basketball court, squads of cheerleaders from each school will be facing off in an all-out competition of vocal strength and endurance (also known as cheerleading). There is a two-hour commitment for all cheerleaders and a $10 entry fee. Prizes will be given to squads with the best cheers and those who raise the most money. Show your school spirit! Fill out a cheerleader sign up form and e-mail it to cheerleaders@basketballmarathon.com.

Become an Event Volunteer:
Volunteer to help out during the Student Basketball Marathon weekend. We need help setting and cleaning up, providing event security, working the log book, stats, and scoreboard, videotaping the marathon, providing transportation for food pick-ups and deliveries, and so forth. If you do not have the time to work on the Student Basketball Marathon during the year, consider becoming an event volunteer. [Sign up online.]

Join Our Support Network:
Can't make a definite commitment right now but still want to be involved? Join our support network listserv. Throughout the year, we will send out emails whenever we need help! [Click here to join our listserv.]

Donate Money:
Have a little extra tuition money or found $5 on the ground? Don't forget to designate if you're a Duke or Carolina supporter! [More Info]
