During this time, the Spartans also made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1957. Despite this success, the team was unable to capture another national championship, falling short in the tournament on several occasions.
The 1990s saw a resurgence of the Michigan State basketball program. Under the guidance of head coach Tom Izzo, the Spartans won their seventh Big Ten Conference championship in 1999 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In the tournament, the Spartans made an impressive run, defeating several top-ranked teams en route to the national championship game.
