Located in Provo, Utah, Brigham Young University (BYU) is home to a successful and storied college basketball program. One of the most notable achievements of the BYU basketball program came in 1981, when the team made an unlikely run to the NCAA Tournament’s national championship game. Led by star player Danny Ainge, the Cougars defeated several highly-ranked teams en route to the final, where they faced off against the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. Despite a valiant effort, the Cougars fell to the Tar Heels in the championship game, finishing the season with a remarkable 31-5 record.
In the following years, the BYU basketball team continued to be competitive in the WAC and Mountain West Conference. The team won four more conference championships between 1988 and 2001, and made six more NCAA Tournament appearances. However, the team struggled to replicate the success they had achieved in the 1980s, and they were unable to advance past the first round of the tournament in any of those appearances.
In the early 2000s, the BYU basketball program experienced a resurgence. Under the leadership of head coach Dave Rose, the Cougars won five conference championships between 2006 and 2015 and made nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 2011, the team made an impressive run to the Sweet Sixteen, where they were ultimately defeated by the University of Florida.
In recent years, the BYU basketball team has continued to be competitive in the West Coast Conference (WCC), winning conference championships in 2017 and 2020. The team has also made four more NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Round of 32 in 2020. Despite their recent success, the Cougars have yet to make it back to the Sweet Sixteen or beyond in the tournament.
